Makena

Makenna-Covespace-t
My friend Yogi called me one day and said she was care taking a house on the ocean, a short drive away.

I  arrived at the house and it was extraordinarily beautiful and I decided to paint this scene with her blessings. I set the canvas and easel up on the deck and proceeded to work on it there for about a week. I had some additional work to do on it in the studio.

This was in 1982 and the later hotels and condominiums cannot be seen in this picture.

Dream Of Pisces

Dream-of-Pisces

space-tThis painting is the “Piece de resistance” of all the 80’s marine artwork just before the era of the Atlantis series.

Again my love for the Dolphins, corals and various scuba diving experiences and sites came out in this work.

Mahi-mahi or dolphinfish on the far left, are preferred eating by the dolphins. A partial amount of my research came from the Honolulu aquarium for this work.

An unusual batfish can be seen near the right.

Dolphin Dream

Dolphin-Dream

My first major endeavor of marine painting

This colorful scene depicts a family of dolphins frolicking in the waters south of the Hawaiian Islands at sunset.

Studying the sea, one can discern the Kaimana, or “diamonds” that form on the ocean from the sun being at a particular angle. Kaimana means “power of the ocean” in Hawaiian. It is also the Hawaiian transcription of the English word diamond.

On the left can be seen the two great mountains rising from the big Island of Hawaii, Mauna Kea, the highest mountain on earth if measured from it’s base underneath the Pacific ocean floor and Mauna loa, which contains the greatest volume or mass of any mountain in the world.

On the right is seen  the island of Maui with the dominant volcano of Haleakala rising from the clouds.

We are looking westward into the sunset toward the island of Oahu, which cannot be seen here and rarely in person.
