Vino Harvest

AA191214-VinoHspace-t

Grapes in this era were irresistible to paint. I could pick them fresh and chose one of the old weathered picking boxes, sit down and paint them directly.

Trentadue Wine

AA191213-Winespace-t

Trentadue in italian means 32

I became friends with Mr Trentadue when I lived in the Dry Creek Valley. He commissioned this piece along with the design of the label and wanted to include some bread, cheese and a bottle of his wine.

Hawaiian Life

AA191208-Hawaiianspace-t

One of my best Still Life

The house where this was painted was one of the Charles A. Lindbergh paradise houses in Kipahulu Maui. This still life was arranged from fruits grown locally with the exception of a pineapple from the other side of the island and cherries from  Washington state. The cherries were included  to signify the influence of the U.S. tie to the Hawaiian Islands (George Washington)

The pieces of fruit in the composition were cut open and painted immediately in order to capture that freshness in the painting. The handmade palm frond hat was woven by an old Japanese man named Uni who sold his hats nearby at a landmark waterfall. A fragrant ginger flower is in the vase and the red sugarcane brings you into the composition.

Loved by many and also known to reside in travel souvenir collections.  This painting was made into cards so tourists visiting the Islands could take home a piece of Hawaii.

Haiku Memories

1980’s version of “Richard’s Window”

Today so many things are re-made.  Old movies are remade all the time, old styles of everything are updated to fit today’s style.

This is a 1980’s version of “Richard’s Window” that was painted in the 1960s. In this version, instead of the urban view, I  incorporated a lake near my house in Haiku, Maui.

Daybreak Concerto

Daybreak-Concertospace-t

This is amongst the two very best still lifes I have ever painted.

Residing for a winter in Wisconsin I had access to some Danish antiques. I arranged them with lighting coming from a window on the left. I included my friends flute, arranged it and marked the spot so they could remove it and play it occasionally and return it to the same spot later.

An antique mirror on the left reveals the windowsill and the snowy view outside. The music sheet reveals a portion of Telemann’s flute concerto, a favorite of mine. The unusual “scissors” shaped like a stork is for picking up stamps.

Iola Wisconsin, where I resided, was known for publishing an important book of stamp collecting.

Fruits of Hawaii

Part of a series of fruits of Hawaii. I would pick the fruits, select the best looking ones, arrange them with the best lighting, and start to paint.

In the jungle, there were numerous wild trees often full of fruit where I lived. One could spend the day driving around Maui collecting wild fruit that grow everywhere.

Zuni Invocation

Zuni-Invocationspace-t
There was an era where I was showing my art in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After a visit to the local Taos Pueblo, I became more interested in Native American culture.

I brought several elements together to form this piece including a Cactus flower on the left, a Zuni pot in the middle and an Edward S Curtis Indian photo on the right.
