Dolphin Isle

AA130106-DolphinI

Paradise Suite II

One of the three pieces of the Paradise Suite that incorporates the elements of land and sea in equal proportions. This painting was inspired from my scuba diving trip to Palau, Micronesia.

Millions of tiny islands dot the waters of the area, and each is covered with vegetation. The waters were very clear at that time, with up to 200 feet visibility. Corals and fish were abundant everywhere, we even saw dolphins.

space-tI envisioned that during the war of the Titans, Poseidon could have lost his urn.

In Greek mythology the Titanomachy, or War of the Titans, was the ten-year series of battles which were fought in Thessaly between the two camps of deities long before the existence of mankind: the Titans, based on Mount Othrys and the Olympians, who would come to reign on Mount Olympus. This Titanomachia is also known as the Battle of the Titans, Battle of Gods, or just The Titan War.

Poseidon is one of the twelve Olympian deities of the pantheon in Greek mythology. His main domain is the ocean and he is called the “God of the Sea”. Additionally, he is referred to as “Earth-Shaker” due to his role in causing earthquakes and has been called the “tamer of horses”. He is usually depicted as an older male with curly hair and beard.

The name of the sea-god Nethuns in Etruscan was adopted in Latin for Neptune in Roman mythology; both were sea gods analogous to Poseidon. Linear B tablets show that Poseidon was venerated at Pylos and Thebes in pre-Olympian Bronze Age Greece as a chief deity, but he was integrated into the Olympian gods as the brother of Zeus and Hades. According to some folklore, he was saved by his mother Rhea, who concealed him among a flock of lambs and pretended to have given birth to a colt, which was devoured by Cronos.

There is a Homeric hymn to Poseidon, who was the protector of many Hellenic cities, although he lost the contest for Athens to Athena. According to the references from Plato in his dialogue Timaeus and Critias, the island of Atlantis was the chosen domain of Poseidon.

Turtle Cave

TurtleCave

In my diving experiences I have observed many turtles. I could see them disappear into caves. One cave was above and below the water, we swam into the cave and observed corals, fish, turtles and birds flying in and out. It was an experience I will never forget.

The Great Whales

The-Great-Whales

Living near the ocean in Maui I was able to observe the great Whales as they come through the bay to spend the winter in Hawaii.

Occasionally we would go out on a whale watching cruise and one day we had the most extraordinary experience of whales ever. A family of Whales surfaced near the boat with all the babies. That sighting I attempted to convey in The Great Whales.

On the right, in the painting we see in the distance the west Maui Mountains. On the left, a small portion of Kaho’lawe Island can be seen.

space-tOceanic themes were strong in my work during the 1980’s and into the early 1990s, with my residency in Hawaii.

Now residing in northern California, I find wonderful coastlines, hidden coves and vistas and the amazing pelican birds.

I have been interested in painting them for years, but felt I needed to be around them in person to get a real feel for expressing their enduring quality.

With the advent of completing this work, I have made a significant contribution to not only the birds, but also a noteworthy coastal image that could even work if the pelicans “flew away”.

The theme of marine coastlines are endless and I’m sure that the 15 years away from the subject has regenerated fuel for newly inspired works such as “Misty Cove” in this genre.

Aquarium at Makena

Aquarium-at-Makena

One of my favorite places to go was Makena Beach which is a beautiful wide, white, sandy beach.

In those days, driving to this beach meant travel over a rough old dusty dirt road. The rewards of the bumpy drive were worth it. A friend I knew had a house on the ocean where you could walk out on the rocks and look back at Makena Beach and Redhill above. Then snorkeling to see the reef, I discerned this as one of those pristine locations that are irresistible to paint, thus this painting was born.

Makena

Makenna-Covespace-t
My friend Yogi called me one day and said she was care taking a house on the ocean, a short drive away.

I  arrived at the house and it was extraordinarily beautiful and I decided to paint this scene with her blessings. I set the canvas and easel up on the deck and proceeded to work on it there for about a week. I had some additional work to do on it in the studio.

This was in 1982 and the later hotels and condominiums cannot be seen in this picture.

Life Force

AA130110-LifeForce

By far the quirkyist  marine piece I have painted to date!

The idea is the ocean sea bursting out of the dry desert, a kind of Surrealistic notion applied to Marine art.

Also, many deserts were formally under the ocean. Here again, putting unassociated objects together for creativity and beauty.

Dream Of Pisces

Dream-of-Pisces

space-tThis painting is the “Piece de resistance” of all the 80’s marine artwork just before the era of the Atlantis series.

Again my love for the Dolphins, corals and various scuba diving experiences and sites came out in this work.

Mahi-mahi or dolphinfish on the far left, are preferred eating by the dolphins. A partial amount of my research came from the Honolulu aquarium for this work.

An unusual batfish can be seen near the right.
